The “Annotated” Mass

Introductory remarks:
I originally put this together with the various ministers explaining their parts; i.e., the choir director explained the music sections; the deacon explained his sections of the mass and I explained the priestly parts. It is a result of discovering that “Catholics” really did not know what was really going on at times in the mass and more importantly why. I do not leave out the parts of the mass that are said “inaudibly” so that parishioners get to know everything that is going on because we are a Church with no secrets, not even for the priest. When I do this in the parish I always give a month’s notice that it is going to happen because it takes about a half hour longer than the usual mass. Those who want to know come do and those who don’t—don’t.

I. Introductory Rite

A. Processional–We process up out of the community to celebrate Mass together because priest, deacon, altar servers, lectors, and eucharistic ministers are called out of the community to follow their call to ministry.

B. Entrance Song--We stand for the entrance song. It gathers us all together into one family of believers. While the song is being sung the ministers process up to the altar. All bow in reverence to the altar and to the Blessed Sacrament in the Tabernacle. The priest and deacon move to the altar and kiss it. They place their hands on the altar in recognition that they cannot do this ministry without the help of the Lord.

C. Greeting--We make the sign of the cross and bless ourselves because at our baptism we are all baptized as priest, prophet and king and it is through this baptism are we empowered to bless ourselves before our God.

The priest extends his hands to you using Paul’s words from 1st Corinthians 1:3. “May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

And you return the greeting with “and also with you” as an acknowledgement that we are one family, laity and clergy alike.

D. Penitential Rite–in recognition that we are all on our own journey of faith and we are a sinful people, we ask the Lord for forgiveness and so spend time recalling our own sinfulness, and repent of them in silence. Then the priest asks the Lord Jesus Christ to have mercy on us all in these words or others similar to them..

“Lord Jesus Christ–you came to heal the contrite. Lord have mercy.”

Joining with the priest/deacon you respond. “Lord have mercy.”

“Christ Jesus–You are the Son of God and the Son of Mary. Christ have mercy.”

Joining with the priest/deacon you respond. “Christ have mercy.”

“Lord Jesus Christ–through your love do we come to know how much we are loved. Lord have mercy.”

Joining with the priest/deacon you respond. “Lord have mercy.”

The priest gives the first absolution. “May Almighty God have mercy on us and bring us to everlasting life.”

You respond with–“Amen!” A holy word that means “so be it”; “let it be”; or “yes”.

Then as a family united we sing together the Glory to God in the Highest which praises our God, our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit for being a part of our lives.

Glory to God the Highest, and peace to His people on earth. Lord God, Heavenly King, Almighty God and Father, we worship You, we give you thanks, we praise You for Your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, You take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us; You are seated at the right hand of the Father receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

“NOTE”! This is not sung or said during Advent and Lent in order to fully celebrate the Glory of God on Christmas and Easter in a more joyful way.

E. Opening Prayer--On behalf of us all the priest says…”Let Us Pray.” The opening prayer asks God to hear us and listen to our prayers as we begin to celebrate the divine mysteries of the Word of God and Eucharist.
