The bishops of the Cameroons recognized the
legitimacy of aspirations towards independence, but they were wary of the
parties inspired by Marxisrn.
The church can only recognize as just and
well-founded the desires of the people of the Cameroon to take the direction
of their country into their own hands an to lead it towards a free honest
and prosperous life. It must encourage them, provided that the great laws of
the gospel truth justice, prudence and charity - are observed. It is
necessary for Christians to recognize the indisputable signs of the parties
which claim to lead them. Some are opposed to truth, charity, justice and
prudence. Catholics must recognize the principles and the methods of the
movements into which they cannot now hurl themselves.
We must not be deceived or lead astray. Unless it
repudiates its very principles and no longer merits its name, Marxism is the
current danger in our civilization. Joint letter by the
Episcopate of the Cameroons, 10 April 1957,
