The struggle between good and evil, the sorry legacy of
original sin continues to rage in the world. Whole peoples run the risk of
lapsing into a barbarism more fearful than that in which the greater part of
the world was still entrapped at the coming of the redeemer. You will have
understood that this menacing peril is Bolshevik and atheistic Communism.
Communism is intrinsically perverse, and one cannot
accept collaboration with it in any area on the part of anyone who wants to
save Christian civilization. If some were to cooperate with the victory of
Communism in their country, led astray by error, they would be the first to
fall, victims of their aberration; and the more the regions Communism
manages to penetrate are distinguished by the antiquity and greatness of
their Christian civilization, the more devastating will prove the hatred of
the 'godless'. Pius XI Encyclical Divini Redemptoris,
19 March 1937.
