The Syllabus (1864 A.D.)

Taking up certain passages front his former writings, Pope Pius IX condemned eighty contemporary errors. This catalogue constitutes the, Syllabus Errorum. However, the condemnation of an error does not necessarily indicate what is the positively correct doctrine. This allowed Mgr. Dupanloup to put forward a moderate interpretation of these condemnations. The following affirmations are condemned.

55. The church must be separate from the state and the state separate from the church.

63. It is permissible to refuse obedience to legitimate princes and even to revolt against them.

77.In our age, it is no longer useful for the Catholic religion to be considered the only state religion, to the exclusion of all other forms of worship.

78. In some Catholic countries the law has rightly provided that foreigners who come to settle there shall enjoy the right to the public practice of their particular forms of worship.

79. It is false that civil liberty for all forms of worship and the full power allowed to all the manifest all their opinions openly and publicly leads people more easily to spiritual and moral corruption and to an extension of the plague of indifferentism.

80. The Roman Pontiff can and must reconcile himself to and take account of progress, liberalism and modern civilization.
